IDENTITY UNDER ATTACK ยท EPISODE 09

Never Read That Code Aloud

A calm caller, a frightening payment, and a code arriving mid-sentence. The text message itself held the answer.

Identity Under Attack, episode 9: Never Read That Code Aloud. Fragment 09, the code.

The caller said the code would reverse a payment. The code itself said something very different, in plain words.

11:02 AM. Saturday.

The caller knew Aarav's name and the name of his bank. He sounded calm and slightly bored, like someone who made this call fifty times a day.

"Sir, we have stopped a payment of forty-eight thousand rupees from your account. To reverse it, I am sending a verification code to your registered number. Please read it back to confirm you are the account holder."

Aarav had made no such payment. His stomach dropped. The text arrived while the caller was still speaking.

A call in progress from someone claiming to be the bank's fraud team, and a text message that arrives at the same time: a code to register a new device, with a warning never to share it with anyone, including bank staff.

"Just the six digits, sir. Quickly, before it goes through."

Aarav looked at the text. Then he read it again, more slowly.
