The Account That Opened Every Door

Nina clicked 'forgot password' to see where the link would go. It went to an inbox she had opened at university and almost never used.

Identity Under Attack, episode 7: The Account That Opened Every Door. Fragment 07, the inbox.

Nina wanted to know where one reset link would go. It led her to an inbox that could quietly open eleven other accounts.

8:15 PM. Tuesday.

Nina had promised herself one hour of account clean-up a week. Tonight she started with a simple question: if she forgot the password to the company's accounting tool, where would the reset link go?

She clicked forgot password to find out. The email arrived in seconds.

A password-reset email for the company's accounting tool, delivered to an old personal email address Nina had opened at university.

It did not arrive in her work inbox. It arrived in an email account she had opened at university and now used for almost nothing.

Almost. She opened a blank page and started a list of everything else that sent its reset links to that address.
