Maya's phone showed a message from Nina. The display photo was Nina's. The name was Nina's. The message was short and a little rushed, the way Nina writes when she is between calls.

A chat message that appears to come from Nina at 9:14 AM, asking Maya to pay this month's amount into a new account today.

Maya had paid Nina before. The amount was expected. The month was right. Nothing in the message asked her to panic, and that is exactly what made it work. Most of these requests do not feel like an attack. They feel like a Tuesday.

She opened her banking app and stopped, because one small thing did not fit.
