They hadn't removed every risk from the digital world. Nobody can. What they had built instead was a house where telling is normal.

The big printer in Riya's studio hummed through its last job of the week on Saturday evening, and for once it wasn't for a client. It was a single sheet: a shield in the middle and twenty-nine small badges around the edge, from The Pauser all the way round to The Check-Up Champ, and one empty space.

Arjun counted them twice. “Twenty-nine. One's missing.”

“That one's for today,” said Riya.

Tara had brought the family agreement down from the fridge to go on the shield too, coffee ring and all, with the weekend charging rule pencilled in at the bottom.

A five-item checklist from the family shield: we pause before we tap, download or share; private things stay private; blocking and reporting are always allowed; telling a grown-up never means trouble; a ten-minute family check every month.

Dev pulled four chairs round the cutting table.
