The Purchase That Surprised Everyone

Nobody in the house had decided to buy anything. That was exactly the problem, and it turned out to be an easy one to fix.

Dev had promised himself one quiet cup of tea on the balcony before he dealt with the card saved on the family tablet. It was twenty past eight on Saturday. Riya was reading on the step beside him. Inside, Arjun was already building a castle in his game, humming the music under his breath.

Dev's phone buzzed. He read the screen, then put his cup down.

It was a receipt, cheerful and polite, thanking the family for renewing something called Gem Vault Monthly and wishing them fun with their bonus gems.

“Did you buy something called Gem Vault?” he asked.

Riya hadn't. Neither had he. They both looked through the window at the boy humming over his castle. Riya set the tone for the morning: “Let's ask him the way we'd want to be asked.”
