The Question About Our Home

Most people Arjun plays with are just kids playing. This is about three questions that don't belong in any game.

Dev was on his knees fixing the kitchen drawer that always sticks. Arjun was on the sofa with the family tablet, playing a building game with a teammate he'd met there on Monday. All week they had built a castle together, and the teammate was good company: patient, funny, brilliant at towers.

On Sunday morning the chat changed direction. Which school did Arjun go to? Which part of town? And then: was he at home on his own after school?

Arjun had typed half his school's name when the last question arrived. His thumbs stopped.

“Papa? Weird check.”
