THE LAST FILE · EPISODE 10

The Backup That Didn't Exist

Priya tried to restore one file, just to be sure. In one hour she found out what three different people had assumed.

3:15 PM. Monday.

Priya had blocked one hour in her calendar and called it "Prove it."

She didn't want to test every file. Just one. She walked over to Neha Iyer, who ran Northstar's finance and accounts, and asked her a strange question.

"If one file disappeared tonight, which would hurt the most?"

Neha didn't even need to think. "The billing workbook. Every invoice, every payment, who owes us what. Without it I'd be rebuilding the year from emails."

So that was the file.

The plan was simple: pretend the workbook was gone, and get last Monday's version back from the backup.

Priya opened the cupboard behind reception, where a small external drive had sat on a shelf since before most of the team joined. Its little light glowed green, the way it always had.

She opened the backup software on the office computer the drive was meant to be connected to.

Last successful backup: 147 days ago.
