The Conversation Before the Change

Alex promised Maya he would answer five questions before installing anything. The first one sent him into a settings page he had never read.

9:40 PM. Saturday.

The installer was ready. Alex had downloaded it that afternoon, set up a free account and drafted a short email for Monday morning: Quick heads-up, we've added a new security tool to your laptops.

Only one thing stood between him and the Install button. A yellow sticky note, stuck to the edge of his screen.

He had promised Maya he would answer them before installing anything. He thought it would take ten minutes.

He started with the first one. To answer it properly, he opened the tool's settings page for the first time.

He scrolled. Then he scrolled some more.

By the time he reached the bottom, his coffee had gone cold, and he hadn't answered a single question.
