THE LAST FILE · EPISODE 04

The USB Nobody Questioned

Her laptop hadn't arrived and the client wanted changes by morning. So the files went home the way they always had: in her pocket.

9:12 AM. Thursday.

Maya arrived early with a small silver USB drive in her hand and three nights of finished Brightline work on it.

She'd been at Northstar for four days. Her laptop was still somewhere between a warehouse and the office, so she worked on the spare desktop by the window. That was fine during the day. It didn't help at 10 PM, when the client sent changes due by morning.

So she'd done what she'd done at college and at her last job. She'd copied the project folder to her own drive, taken it home, and finished on the family computer. She'd even told Priya.

Nobody had told her not to. Nobody had told her anything about it at all.

She sat down and reached for the USB port.

"Wait," Priya said from the next desk. "Before you plug that in. What else is on it?"

Maya looked at the drive. Then at Priya.

"Honestly?" she said. "I'm not sure."
